  1. During sunny noons in the hot summer months, especially in aquaculture ponds with fertile water and abundant phytoplankton, aerators should be turned on for 2-3 hours. On hot, sunny days, phytoplankton photosynthesis is particularly vigorous, releasing large amounts of oxygen into the water. In aquaculture ponds with rich water quality, where water transparency reaches 20-30 centimeters, the middle layer of the water lacks sunlight and thus exhibits weaker photosynthesis. Since aerators have the function of lifting water upward, turning them on can create a vertical circulation within the aquaculture pond.

  2. During the day, the sunlight is intense and the water temperature is high. However, in the evening, sudden thunderstorms bring large amounts of cool rainwater into the aquaculture ponds, causing the surface water temperature to drop sharply. As a result, the surface water becomes lighter and sinks rapidly, while the deeper water, being warmer and denser, rises upward. The oxygen-rich water from the upper layer is then transferred to the lower layer, temporarily boosting the dissolved oxygen levels there. Yet, this increase is quickly consumed, leading to a rapid decline in dissolved oxygen throughout the entire pond—thus making it easy for fish to float toward the surface. Therefore, it’s crucial to promptly turn on the aeration equipment. Special note: It’s generally not advisable to start paddle-wheel aerators in the evening, because at this time, photosynthesis by phytoplankton comes to a halt, leaving them unable to replenish oxygen in the water. Once the aerator is started, the dissolved oxygen distribution between the upper and lower layers becomes uniform. As the dissolved oxygen in the upper layer decreases, it can no longer be replenished; meanwhile, the dissolved oxygen in the lower layer is rapidly depleted, accelerating the overall consumption of dissolved oxygen in the entire aquaculture pond.

  3. In summer, if there are consecutive rainy days, photosynthesis by phytoplankton will be weaker, leading to lower dissolved oxygen levels in the water and potentially causing oxygen deficiency. This can easily result in fish surfacing for air. Therefore, more aerators should be turned on.

  Although fish live in water, they still need oxygen. When the oxygen content in the water is low, fish tend to float their heads more frequently. Aeration machines for fish ponds use impellers to accelerate water flow, greatly increasing the contact between water and air. As a result, abundant oxygen from the air comes into contact with the water and dissolves into it, achieving an aeration effect.

This is one of the main reasons why oxygen levels tend to drop sharply from late night into early morning on hot days. However, if a heavy rainstorm occurs in the evening, the situation changes dramatically. The cold, heavy rainwater quickly sinks to the bottom of the pond, stirring up sediment, leftover feed, fecal waste, biological residues, and other organic matter from the pond bottom and bringing them into the middle and upper layers of the water. These harmful organic substances rapidly deplete the dissolved oxygen in the water. Before dawn even breaks, the dissolved oxygen in the water may be completely used up, leaving the fish vulnerable to oxygen depletion and causing them to float to the surface—a phenomenon known as "floating and surfacing." Therefore, sudden heavy rainfall in the evening or at night can also lead to oxygen depletion and fish floating to the surface.
